RENO, Nev. (December 12, 2016) – Douglas G. Merrill, M.D., MBA, joins Renown Health as Executive Vice President and Chief Medical and Academic Officer.

Dr. Merrill brings more than 30 years of medical, hospital and teaching experience ranging from quality and patient safety to surgical care and interdisciplinary team training. Dr. Merrill comes to Renown from University of California – Irvine Health where he served as Chief Medical Officer, Senior Associate Dean for Quality and Safety, and Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology. His work helped UC Irvine Health become one of the nation’s highest-rated institutions for quality and safety.

In his role, Dr. Merrill is responsible for maintaining high patient care and safety standards throughout Renown’s integrated network. Additionally, he will develop educational and research endeavors for the organization's medical staff and lead collaborations with partners like the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and Stanford Medicine.

Dr. Merrill earned his medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his residency in Anesthesiology at Stanford University. He also received his Master of Business Administration at the Tippie School of Business at the University of Iowa. He will complete his Masters in Bioethics and Medical Humanities this spring – bringing his avid support for the teaching and practice of clinical bioethics and teaching of medical history and humanities to Renown and UNR Med.

Max Coppes, M.D., PhD, MBA, previously held the position of Renown Health Executive Vice President and Chief Medical and Academic Officer before transitioning to a new joint leadership role as Physician-in-Chief for Renown Children’s Hospital and UNR Med Professor and Nell J. Redfield Chair of Pediatrics.
