RENO, Nev. (Oct. 7, 2016) – Tickets are still available for the Willy Wonka-themed gala, Magic 2016, which benefits the Child Health Institute and Renown Children’s Hospital. Magic 2016 is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2016 in the Downtown Reno Ballroom. The evening’s program will include stories of the miracles that occur daily at Renown Children’s Hospital.

During the event, Dr. Stephen Missall will receive the Arthur J. Lurie, M.D., Distinguished Physician Award to honor the genuine difference his work has made in our community. The Arthur J. Lurie, M.D., Distinguished Physician Award is given in memory of a respected pioneer in cardiovascular surgery. Dr. Lurie performed the first open heart surgery in northern Nevada at Renown Health in 1977. A nominating committee of local physicians select the award recipient.

“It is a testament to Dr. Missall’s commitment to the health of our region that his fellow doctors selected him for this award,” said Larry Duncan, administrator, Renown Children’s Hospital. “His passion for our community’s smallest patients has significantly improved the health of our population. He is truly a wonderful asset to the community.”

In September 1973, Dr. Missall moved to Reno, joining Dr. Donald Pickering in the practice of neonatology, consulting pediatrics, pediatric intensive care, and together, they opened the intensive care nursery at what was then known as Washoe Medical Center (now Renown Health). This included the development of a transport system for sick babies born outside of Reno. He was the Chief of Pediatrics from 1975-1976 and was also on the faculty of University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine teaching medical students and residents from 1978-1990.

“The opportunity to practice neonatology in Reno over the past 40 years from its infancy to the current sophisticated status has been a rewarding and fulfilling endeavor,” said Dr. Missall. “I have been fortunate to have experienced and been part of the development of the marked advances in the care of preterm babies and their improved survival rates.”

The annual Magic Gala celebrates how our community supports children and the very magic they bring to life. A primary goal is to keep care close to home, providing quality children’s care for the children and families of northern Nevada. This year, Magic will help expand and revitalize clinical space for pediatric specialists allowing us to keep care closer to home for our communities’ children facing serious medical challenges. Over the years, Magic support has raised funds for much needed medical equipment throughout Renown Children’s Hospital and towards the development of the all new Child Health Institute.
