Downtown teaching farm will feed families and serve as a living classroom for children
Media is invited to an event to celebrate the opening of the Renown Health and Urban Roots Urban Teaching Farm built by AmeriCorps members. Other partners include: Lowe’s, NV Energy, Reno Lumber and Full Circle Soils and Compost.
10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 1
1700 E. 2nd St., Reno, on the northeast corner of Gould and 2nd Streets.
The Urban Teaching Farm is aimed at growing nutritious food as well as raising awareness about gardening and healthy eating. It is bringing new life to a previously vacant lot owned by Renown at the corner of Gould and 2nd Streets. The farm consists of three large 30 ft. x 72 ft. greenhouses with high tunnel-shaped plastic protective coverings, along with 22 raised beds. “Young farmers” 11 to 15 years old will learn how food is grown and harvested and will be able to take nutritious food to their homes. Through the Prescription Food Pantry, a partnership with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, children who are identified as being food insecure, including children at Renown Children’s Hospital, will receive a prescription for food. Some of that food will come from the Urban Teaching Farm in a “kids feeding kids” program. The Urban Teaching Farm accepts donations and volunteers.
